What We Can Learn From Celebrity Eating Disorder Stories

Recently, a number of celebrities have come forward to share their eating disorder stories, including comedian Nikki Glaser, Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner, and TikTok star Remi Bader. This sort of honesty requires a lot of strength and vulnerability, and we can all learn from their courage.

Below, let’s consider four positive outcomes of celebrities speaking out about their recovery stories.

1. It raises awareness.

Rather than keep quiet about their struggles, celebrities often share their recovery stories with the hope of letting others know that they’re not alone. Far from alone, in fact! It is estimated that nearly 30 million Americans (20 million women and 10 million men) have struggled with an eating disorder during their lifetime. That means, someone you know may be silently suffering. By using their platforms for good, celebrities can not only spark much-needed conversations about eating disorders but also encourage others to seek help (more on that later!).

2. It shows that eating disorders don’t discriminate.

Many people believe that eating disorders only affect young, thin, affluent white women — and that’s simply not the case. For instance, the LGBTQ+ community is thought to be at higher risk for eating disorders and disordered eating, and studies reveal that it can start as early as age 12 among this population’s youth. Unfortunately, resources are not readily available for these patients. When celebrities like Demi Lovato and Jazz Jennings share their struggles, others in the LGBTQ+ community may feel emboldened to seek help for their own disordered eating behaviors.

3. It reveals unknown facts about eating disorders.

There is a wide misconception that an eating disorder is a lifestyle choice rather than a mental illness. However, we now know that they are caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, and personality factors. When celebrities speak out about their struggles, they reveal the truth about this deadly disease.

4. It is inspiring!

Celebrities have the unique opportunity to serve as positive role models and change the conversation surrounding mental health. Many people feel shame around their eating disorder, which can cause them to hide their problem rather than seek help. When celebrities are willing to discuss their struggles – especially when they reveal the deeper root of their eating disorder – it can help others find the confidence to do the same.

Perhaps most importantly, celebrity eating disorder stories prove that recovery is possible.

By speaking out and reducing the stigma surrounding eating disorders, celebrities show that, with proper help, sufferers can go on to live full and fulfilling lives.
